Canyon swing with camera strapped to my hand

January 19, 2006

Whilst in New Zealand for New Year, I made the decision to do a Canyon Swing. I’ve always been keen to do a bungy jump, but over the years I’ve become slightly hesitant about it – mainly due to the prospect of my eyes popping out and other horror stories I’ve been told.

Anyway, the Canyon Swing – well I’ll let them do the talking:

Once you ‘depart’ the platform you will freefall 60m/200ft down into the canyon until the ropes smoothly pendulum you into a giant 200m arc at 150kph. You will then complete a couple of massive swings before you come to rest. We then winch you back up to the platform with a huge smile on your face and a memory you will not forget in a hurry.

I thought it would be advisable to book up 2 of these jumps, as I always find that if you can do it once – you’ll only want to do it again. As you can imagine the Canyon Swing team thought this was slightly strange. This of course started the baiting, which drove me into a state of nervous unrest on the first jump… with shaking knees and dry mouth.

The experience is exceptional, and one I would recommend to anyone – its like your body goes inside out for a second, and as you come into the swing all is calm again…

On the second jump they taped my ixus onto me, the results are great (i think) if you bear in mind I’m plummeting to possible death.
